Installing software from a usb disk drive? Mac osx?

Q. My disk drive just broke on my MacBook. Is there anyway to use a usb disk drive to install software from a disk?? Im running snow leopard.

A. Sure -- you simply plug the external USB drive into the Macbook and insert the CD or DVD. It should appear after a few moments on your Desktop.

But perhaps you mean to ask something more complicated?

I can't install OS X on my USB hard drive, what are some compatible externals that can boot OSX 10.4.3?
Q. I have a iBook PPC G4 1.33 with a measly 40gb internal. There is no way I can get the iomega USB 80gb to format and accpet the OS X install from the start up dvd install procedure to be the startup. I have gone through the partition and format issues multiple times. It seems that based on other forums and articles the only solution is using a fire wire drive. I am not about to go out and buy a another drive that will give me the "OS X can not install on this volume. This volume can not be used as a start up disk"
I use garage band and I need to install the jampacks but not on this internal drive. I also am holding back on my Reason 3.0 install. I need this extra space on my start up disk!!!!
Any links or a list of tried and trued FW400 drives that will accept the start up disk install and boot on the ibook would be greatly appreciated. I know the Maxtor has a firewire 800 E0V200 and Western Digital has a 320 gb that I am looking at but I do not want to invest unless I know.

A. good question..

death records of rex gene lowson jr in cabell huntington w.va.?

Q. he was still born on september 9 1984 mother name is sally ann lawson and father rex gene lawosn

A. Go to the Cabell Co courthouse. Death certs are public records. I'm not sure Cabell Co is big enough to be online yet.

Q.

A. Sounds like you are trying to get hooked up dude.

Information on Beech Fork Cemetery in West Virginia -- Cabell or Wayne County?
Q. I'm looking for information on Beech Fork Cemetery, located most probably in either Wayne, Cabell, or Mingo County. I have a relative that died in 1930 who's death certificate states he was buried there, but no location is given.

WVGenWeb does not have a listing for Beech Fork in any of the above county pages. Google does not return any cemeteries of that name. Findagrave.com has 2 Beech Fork Cemeteries listed. One in Wayne County that was added by an individual when she added a death certificate (only 1 record listed). The 2nd one is listed as being in Mingo County and only had a dozen or so entries. A family genealogy page (not my family) has Beech Fork Cemetery as being located in Huntington, Cabell County.

What I really want to know is:

1) Is it still in existence?
2) Did it go through a name change or stop being used?
3) Where is it located?
4) Is a list of those buried still available or accessible?

I know I'm asking a lot and the odds that a random person on here might have a lead is slim, but thanks anyway for any/all help!
@ Ancestor -- it might be. Unfortunately, I live on the West Coast, so there's no way to prove/disprove his final resting place at this time since he's not listed as being interred anywhere online that I can find.

A. Could it be Beech Fork State Park in Huntington, Wayne Co. WV and the Bowen (Family) Cemetery next to it?

What Windows Vista do i need to buy for it to work with mac boot camp?

Q. Im getting ready to buy a Vista program for my mac so i can use boot camp but theres like amillion different types ..

do i need windows vista for system builders?
Windows Vista upgrade ?
Windows Vista full version like the one at walmart?

Its confusing and i dont want to buy something that wont work .

A. You will need a full version of XP or higher. Now as for Vista it can be Home Premium Edition it does work better with Vista Professional, this might be surprising to hear. The Vista Ultimate does work better than Home Edition not as well as Vista Professional.

However the 32bit works more smoothly than 64bit depending on which version of Vista.

Example if using 4GB RAM for your Mac then use Vista/Win7 Pro 64bit.
Example if using 3GB or less than you an use Vista/Win7 Home Premium Edition 32bit.
If money is not an issue then go with the Pro version.

Hope this helped and if you have any more questions just ask.

btw... Get Bootcamp, Parallels, and with either Vista or Win7 you will need to turn off Indexing to help the Windows OS run much smoother, faster, and with less issues.

what is the minimum amount of ram for running vista via boot camp on a macbook pro?
Q. I was wondering what the minimum amount of ram is for running boot camp and vista home premium on my macbook pro.

A. It depends on the Vista version:
Home Basic needs 512MB, Home Premium / Business / Ultimate need 1GB. Of course, more is merrier since other programs need memory, too. You won't just launch Vista and then sit there looking at its beauty. Most folks will be happy with double the recommended minimum.

By the way, you don't actually run Vista with Boot Camp. You only need Boot Camp to partition your drive for Vista install and to burn a disc with Mac drivers for Vista.

Can I install Parallels after I use Boot Camp to install Windows Vista?
Q. I got a MacBook Pro that came with Boot Camp. I got a copy of Vista Business, and I used Boot Camp to build a partition and install Vista. I don't like restarting everytime, so I want to switch to parallels. Do I have to delete the partition and erase the Windows side, then reinstall it after I get Parallels? Or can I install Parallels now and have it bridge the gap?

A. You can install Parallels and have it use your Boot Camp partition, provided you don't plan on using Boot Camp to run Windows once you do so. When you transfer the Boot Camp partition over to Parallels, Windows detects that it's running on a new machine, so you (usually) have to re-activate it. If you start up Boot Camp again, you'll have to re-active again. Then when you go back to Parallels, you have to re-activate yet again.

After about 10 or 12 times, Windows pops up with a Genuine Advantage error to inform you that your software might be pirated, and you have to call MS Tech Support and go through this incredibly long and complicated process that eventually gives you an activation code that you use to re-activate. Obviously you don't want to have to spend two hours on the phone every time you want to switch over to Boot Camp from Parallels or vice-versa.

how do you reformat an external hard drive to go on my Mac osx?

Q. I have a WD external hard drive that my Mac time machine says needs to be reformatted. How do I do this? please only serious people willing to help.

A. Open up Disk Utility, you can sear in Spotlight, and select the disk on right side, it should not be Macintosh HD or where you are booting from, then click the Erase tab, Select from the pull down menu, "Mac OS Extended Journal", then click erase.

The drive should appear on the desktop.

How do I go from Mac OSX 10.4.11 to 10.5.8?
Q. I just got an iPod touch, and it says that it's not compatible unless the operating system is 10.5.8 or higher. How do I download this/make it work?
I have no problem buying anything, I just need to know how to get to it, and how to buy it.

A. You need 10.5 (leopard) or 10.6 (snow leopard) upgrades. Youll have to buy them from a mac store. You can just update your os software from 10.4 to 10.5 or 10.6 through the software update because these are new and different operating systems and are needed to be purchased.
If your machine doesnt have an intel processor then 10.6 wont work and youll have to settle for 10.5. From there you can just update the os to 10.5.8 through the software update thing under the apple icon, this is free.

Unless you know someone with a 10.5 install disk that wouldve come with a new (now old) mac then youll need to buy it.

Going to replace my old HDD in my macbook with a newer newer one, do I do this then install mac osx?
Q. or should I transfer my data from my laptop to the new HDD using a data transfer device, I really don't want to spend the extra money to get it, I'd rather just install the new HDD, then insert the mac osx disk and install leopord, then plug in my external HDD and let time machine restore my computer to its current state, I'd rather do it like this. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

A. you need to put the new os on the drive before you can transfer the data

Mac OSX Developers: Can someone explain to me in a nutshell what is the difference with Cocoa and Objective-C?
Q. Other than being different languages, can you give me examples of why one would choose Cocoa over Objective-C and vis-versa?
I appreciate everybody's help!

A. Objective-C is a programming language (it is C plus the Smalltalk object-oriented system).

Cocoa is the standard library of classes used for interacting with Mac OS X. For example, you can use Cocoa classes in programs written in Java or Objective-C. For example, there are classes for working with files, for creating windows and for creating processes and threads. All the standard OS stuff.

The Cocoa class library is taken from the NeXT OS. Here is the history:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NeXT

There is a free / open source implementation of this class library, GNUstep, if you want to learn Cocoa without having a Mac:

Printing from Mac OSX to Windows 2000 Server?
Q. I have a network with Windows and Mac. My Server is running 2000 Server, and has my Printer attached. I am trying to connect my Mac to it so I can print, but have so far been unsuccessful. I have tried just about all the guides out there, and am still having issues. Please help!

A. Now let's be reasonable. You can't say about someone "thy dont even no how to use it themselves" until you learn to spell in English. Then you should just offer the help this person needs instead of laughing. I did tech support for Dell several years ago and I can assure you, Windows users are not universally geniuses about their networking systems, either.

Is this a printer that has an ethernet card? If not, the idea of printing directly to the printer's IP address is pointless. Is it a USB printer? That's usually why it must be connected to a computer instead of to a router. I will assume it's a USB printer which means it relies on Windows 2000 to connect it to the network.

If the Windows computer is correctly setup for sharing a printer, this will be easy, because the Mac side of networking is simple. You should first connect the printer directly to the Mac and test it to see if your Mac prints with this printer. If not, reinstall the printer software and try again. If it prints fine when directly connected, go back to the network arrangement. Does your Mac connect to the Internet by DHCP networking or by PPPoE or by dialup? If it connects by DHCP, it should be setup correctly for all services offered by the Windows computer. Click Go > Connect to server. Type in the IP address of the Windows computer. Can you login and mount a 'share' (Window-ese for a network drive volume or shared directory)? If not, you need to troubleshoot general DHCP networking for the Windows computer.

Open a document on the Mac. Go to File > Print. In the print dialog box, click to choose a printer. If the shared printer is not listed, you don't have the Windows computer setup correctly to share the printer. Windows XP is fairly simple in this respect. Win 2000 is not so easy but you can get help from the Windows question area of this Yahoo Answers forum or... contact Microsoft.

USB superdrive keeps spitting out the disks? Please help?

Q. I have a Macbook Air and I bought this USB superdrive but it keeps spitting out CDs. Is there something wrong with it? would I have to replace it or get it fixed please? Already did updates on the laptop. Its OS X version 10.8.2.

A. Hello, Right click and uninstall theCD-ROM, DVD ROM driver in the device manager and restart the computer. The operating system would attempt to install the required driver automatically. If this does not happen, manually download and install the driver. If even replacing the driver does not fix it, get a technician to look for a hardware problem in the disk tray/lens. CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs
check this site, you may need silver light installed.
Hey, I enjoyed your question, I have worked as a technician most of my life, I hope I have helped you...

Why do Mac applications that are downloaded from the internet come in .dmg files, but not an .app file?

Q. Whenever I download an application from the internet and not the Mac App Store, the app comes in a .dmg file, why not just an app if you don't have to install those apps that come in .dmgs?

A. a .dmg is a disk image. It is very similar to a .iso, except it has encryption and compression options.

a .app is not a file. It is a folder... the call it an Application Bundle. If you use terminal, you can cd through it like any other folder. In Finder if you want to see inside of a .app you have to right click and choose Show Package Contents. Its just a normal folder, but Finder knows if the folder ends with .app to hide the insides... and knows how to handle trying to "open" that special folder.

You can create a folder in Finder and name it something .app and play around with it.. it will act like a broken application in Finder since the internal folders and files won't be right to be a real app.

Being that a .app is really just a folder, you cannot download folders, they need to be a single file. That can be a zip, or rar, or dmg, or whatever... Apple just prefers making it a disk image over a Zip.

If I have the an application installed on my Mac, do I still need the DMG of the app?
Q. The reason I ask is because I'm cleaning up my computer and I want to know if I can delete the DMG if the app is installed and then after deletion have the app still work.

A. I like to keep them to save downloading them again should I need to reinstall (especially large downloads) but rather than leaving them on the hard drive taking up unnecessary space, burn them to CD/DVD and store that way.

Install Mountain Lion.app to Install Mountain Lion.dmg?
Q. Hi, I have recently joined the apple developer program and downloaded the Mountain Lion Developer Preview, but i don't want it to be the operating system that my computer runs, i want to run it as a virtual machine in Parallels Desktop 7. I am currently running Lion 10.7.3. I have already tried to make a virtual machine for it but it tells me that no operating system is installed, so i need a way to convert my Mountain Lion.app to a DMG file.

A. "I have recently joined the apple developer program"

Perhaps you should spend a bit more time on the Apple Developer Program. You can burn Mountain Lion as a .dmg in Disk Utility. It will not make any difference. Mountain Lion is a preview version and will not be supported in Parallels or other virtual machines. You can install it on a separate drive and boot into that to test your software with it.
