Q. I am looking to record my songs and heard garageband was the best software, so can anyone give me the site i can download garageband for windows for free, thanks

A. GarageBand is part of the iLife Suite. It's commercial software, less than $100.00. It runs only on Mac OS.

How do I make a vocoder using garageband software?
Q. Been trying to figure out how to do it on Garageband and im stumped. Tried to make one in garageband, that didnt work; Ill try and download one that works with garageband but I have no idea how to find the software i downloaded and use it in garageband. Can anyone help me out with an easier way???

A. I didn not know this was possible with garage band at all. But I do know there are several add-on paks for Garage Band called "jam paks". I bought the orchestral one that adds some more really nice loops as well as some really great sounding synthesized instruments. Maybe you need some feature thats in one of then other jam paks.

im looking to start producing my own house electro music how would a nanopad be for my first purchase?
Q. im new to this and i understand the midi process however i dont want to go out and spend tons of money on something i dont know how to use. This just seems simple enough to start and seems as tho it has what i need to start making beats and i also have garageband as software which i heard works ok with the nano pad...all suggestions are helpful...Thanks

A. You can try here for more help with that.

What source should I consult to find out why my computer does not function with my new LCD monitor?
Q. I have a Quicksilver G4 mac (using OSX 10.3.9) that has a Nvidia GeForce2 MX graphics card. I recently purchased a Samsung 204B LCD monitor It has both VGA and DVI inputs and offers the ability to rotate the screen from landscape to portrait mode.
I can use the DVI input and the rotate feature on my new macbook (intel 950 graphics card) (using OS X 10.4.3) but not on the older G4. Only the VGA input works.
Is this a graphics card issue? Can it be tweaked? Who should I ask? How can I tell if another card will support the features?

A. Try lowering your screen resolution to 640X480 (256 Color)

That should activate it to default detection mode.
It Usually happens when the Video card is set to a Non-Standard Refresh rate. Or Set to a resolution the LCD can't handle.

How to install mac OS X through a CD drive?

Q. I have a purple imac G3 computer and I now know I can upgrade it to mac OS X, however all the mac OSX discs are all in DVD format. Is there any way I could get CD forms of this operating system or turn a DVD into a set of 4 CDs or will I need an external drive?

A. Leopard will not run on less than a G4 867mhz.

OSX up to Panther (10.3) was available on CD, you can probably find it via an online search.

There was a Media Exchange Program for Tiger, through which you could get CDs for an additional $10 after purchase of the installation DVDs. You're not likely to find those, as they came straight from Apple.

Technically, Tiger should work on your G3 iMac, 256k of RAM is necessary, you'll wish you had more though... You might be able to mount your G3 hard drive on another Mac via target mode and install from there.

An external DVD drive would be easiest, but make sure your G3 iMac will boot from it.

What all Mac os x cat programs are there?
Q. I was browsing on their site earlier, and I saw one of their products was MacOSX 10.6 Snow Leopard. When I looked at the product page, I saw they mentioned Mac OSX Tiger, and I was curious if anyone could give me a list of these things...?

A. These things from Apple with big cat names are called "operating system". In the Microsoft world, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 are examples of operating systems.

Apple makes a type of computer that is different electronically from the other brands. They use a different type of operating system called "Mac OS". Before 2001, these different operating systems evolved through versions that were named "OS 7.5" or "OS 8.6" or "OS 9.2". When Apple changed the operating system into a UNIX based system, they also changed the naming system a bit. Besides going forward with the numbers, they started using code names of big cats for OS X (Roman numeral ten) after the Public Beta. As was traditional at Apple, the code names were not public, just a little inside humor for Apple employees. For example, OS 7.5 had two code names. The project started as "Mozart", in keeping with the music themes. They changed it to "Capone" as a foil to the code name "Chicago" for Windows 95. Before the big cat names, they often used music terms as code names for the operating system, such as Rhapsody, Allegro, and Copeland.

Beginning with OS 10.2, Apple changed their policy and started using the code name in advertising. Here are the OS X names:

* Mac OS X Public Beta (shown in "About This Mac" as "10.0 beta" -- very buggy) released September 13 2000 and "sold" for $29.95 shipping and handling; not included with any new computers, as it was for testing purposes only.
* Mac OS X 10.0.4 released 21 June 2001; the first retail version of OS X. As it was so radically different from the "Clasic" style of Mac OS, Apple included both OS 9.2 and OS X with new computers for the next three months.
* Mac OS 10.1 (code named Puma) released 25 September 2001
* Mac OS 10.2 (code named Jaguar; the first Apple product advertised with its code name) released 23 August 2002
* Mac OS 10.3 (Panther) released 24 October 2003
* Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) released 29 April 2005
* Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) released 26 October 2007
* Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) released 28 August 2009

Incidentally, you don't have a wide range of operating systems you can choose from for an Apple computer. The hardware always uses the highest level technology, and the operating systems are updated frequently with little regard for older Macs, so you can't use any operating system that is older than your Mac, and eight year old Macs can't use the newest operating system. At the link below, you can locate a given Mac and see what minimum and maximum version of the operating system can be installed.

Is there a program that I can use to mirror all my files in OSX?
Q. I would like to have an exact copy of my files on an external drive so that I can access them with another computer.

A. You can use disk utility to do this!

NOTE: If you are having problems with this method of backing up using Disk Utility, there is an alternative that seems to be more consistent: Instead of opening Disk Utility from your Applications folder, you can boot your computer using the OSX Installation CD or DVD 1, then (after your computer is started up), click on the 'Installer' menu and select 'Disk Utility...' from there, then go through steps 3-7, restart, and do the rest of the steps outlined here. (Thanks, Niel!)

1. Once every month or every other month do a full backup to an external drive. Turn on and plug in the external drive.
2. Open Disk Utility (in Applications>Utilities)
3. Click on your computer's main hard drive (the one with Mac OSX installed on it) in the left-hand column in Disk Utility. (Click on the same name as the drive name on your desktop).
4. Click the 'Restore' tab (Mac OSX 10.3 Panther required).
5. Drag your main hard drive into the 'Source' white field.
6. Drag your external FireWire drive into the 'Destination' white field. (make sure any other data on your FireWire drive is not the same name as anything on your main OSX drive, and that you have deleted any previous full backup by dragging everything to the trash and emptying it.
7. Click 'Restore' and it will copy all data across to your FireWire drive.
8. When it is finished, Go to System Preferences and click on Startup Disk, and select the External FireWire drive, then restart and make sure the computer is able to boot from the external drive. If it can, then everything went well, and you can unplug the FireWire drive.
9. To restore (if you ever need to do so), do all these steps, except hold down the 'Option' key at startup and choose to boot off the external FireWire drive, and put the FireWire drive into the 'Source' field, and your main drive into the 'Destination' field.

where can i find a good tutorial for how to use imovie 11?

Q. im trying to create a video that has a set of pictures and movies that i have saved in iphoto and i cant figure out how to do this. so what is a good tutorial of how to do this?

A. usually i find tutorial on youtube, just type what you want in the youtube search box, then you will find many good guide

How to overlay a photo onto movie footage in iMovie?
Q. I have a presentation where I have to create a tutorial-style movie. I have footage of myself talking and I need to overlay a still photo in a top corner of the footage as a sort of prop.

*** not a picture in the middle of a clip, a picture INTO the movie itself, still showing both the footage and the photo at the same time.

Please help!!

A. NOTE: I am assuming that you have iMovie '09 or up. To check this, go to iMovie>About iMovie. If it says iMovie 09 or iMovie 11, you're good to go.
1. Go to the menu iMovie>Preferences
2. Make sure the box that says "Show advanced Tools" is checked.
3. Exit preferences. Drag the video footage into the project.
4. Drag the photo that you want in the corner on top of the video footage. A menu will pop up that gives you many options. Click Picture in Picture.
5. Resize and change the timing to your liking.
Have fun!

What should I make my school video about?
Q. Okay, so in school, my technology teacher told our class that our assignment was to make a video of whatever we want. He said we'd be able to work in class and we'd have lots of time to do it. Also, he said that we had to make it appropriate (of course). I honestly have no idea what to do (however, I was thinking about doing some sort of educational anti-bullying awareness type project. I kind of wanted to do something fun rather than educational, though)... My sister did a tutorial on how to draw a monkey, and some other kids did a Tiger Woods/Bill Gates interview-puppet-show thing... It'd be awesome if you guys could give me some suggestions! Our teacher's literally giving us total freedom to do whatever we want. I just don't know what to do.
Also, if it helps, I'm an 8th grade female!

We are also using iMovie '11 to make the project. I can always edit mine at home since I have a Mac.(:

A. I was going to say something else (original- about you or your life) but an anti-bullying awareness is the most perfect idea!! just make sure your audience is entertained and make sure the video is informing too! But if you do not want to do that maybe something about something you like to do or you like a lot, our ideas aren't the best, it's the ideas that you come up with!

Is it legal for family member to use a student discount?

Q. Is it legal for a student who qualifies for a student discount on microsoft software to buy it at the discounted price for a family member?

A. The discount is intended for only the student. I don't know if it's legal or not, but the agreement is for STUDENT use, not for everyone in his/her family.

What is some free stuff/software or discounts I can get as a college student? Major is computer science?
Q. I have already taken advantage of the Microsoft dreamspark program and got a discount on my adobe software. I also know of the discounts at the apple store.

I was hoping there would be a discount on the apple dev programs but no luck there as far as I could see.

Any other places that gives student discounts for computer science related stuff/software?

Thanks!

A. Nobody gives discounts to students, colleges use students as money banks. they charge $200 for a book, they charge parking, the food is expensive, and they put them in a loan hole, some as much as $100,000. they take advantage of poor kids that are trying to learn. in most other countries education is free and ppl respect students giving cheap or free food, housing and books, but in America its different.

What about discounts through universities and university bookstores?
Q. I know that Apple as well as various other vendors (Dell for example) may honor student discounts through their websites. Even universities will have discount software/hardware deals, and university bookstores that operate under Barnes and Noble will have some discounts on laptops (macs included) too.

My question concerns how much exactly is the difference between a discounted mac in comparison with an on sale windows laptop machine like dell or ubuntu dell?

A. Apple student MacBook Discount is 10% which means your MacBook @ $1099 will be $899
There are other product discounts as well.

More info on discounts here

As for what is the difference between a discounted MacBook and a discounted Dell - one is a Mac.

Does the Apple TV allow you to play movies in your iTunes Library?
Q. I have a lot of movies in my iTunes library because I love watching shows/movies on-the-go on my iphone. I was wondering if an Apple TV would allow me to watch these movies/shows on my TV. If yes, how so? Do I sync it in? I'm confused.

A. false.
you can stream it from your computer to an apple tv over wifi. its called airplay, and its fantastic.

any movie in my library i have started to play on my computer or phone. then in the bottom right of the iTunes window theres a little screen icon with a triangle. click it and select which device you want it played to. theres nothing you have to do to its files or format or to the apple tv other than have it on.

make sure that all IOS and OSX devices are logged into the same apple ID and that home sharing is turned on.

you can do a lot with airplay. even stream youtube from your phone to the big screen etc.

oh and btw, you can play them from your laptop to your phone to the apple tv as well. i recommend the free remote app. its very helpful with this stuff.

How can I keep a window always-on-top on Mac OSX?
Q. Hey, I have a tv tuner connect on my mac, it is awesome but when Im not in full screen, if I click on another application, the window with the tv tuner (eye tv) gets under it... so my question is, is there an option on mac os that I can see it up for keeping an window always on top? thanks

A. Time to get a second monitor!

I run eyetv on my second monitor full screen, while I try to work (or answer yahooo! answers)

before I got the second monitor, I had the same problem as you. There is no workaround, in eyetv.

Some apps are nicer the way they share the screen, only bringing the current window to the front, others are doing it against the apple UI recommendations!

Would you want your windows to go semi-transparent?? there are tools to make a window semi-transparent. I tried one some years back, it got very confusing!
