How do I make a bootable OS X external hard drive using a Windows machine?

Q. I am trying to make a bootable external hard drive to install OS X 10.5.6 onto a netbook, but I don't have a Mac.

Q. I have a USB that came with it. I know there is an application I can download but what is it?

A. The Sony DCR-SR68 is a standard definition video, hard disc drive based, camcorder that records to highly compressed MPG files. iMovie generally cannot deal directly with these (neither can Windows MovieMaker, so you aren't missing anything).

Connect the camcorder to the Mac with a USB cable and put the camcorder in "Play" (or PC) mode. This should mount the camcorder to the Mac's desktop. Look through the camcorder hard disc drive... locate the MPG files. DO NOT move or delete ANY of the files on the camcorder using the Mac... Copy the MPG files to the Mac. You will need to download and install a transcoder - converter - to change the MPG files into something more useful.

MPEG Streamclip from www.squared5.com and HandBrake from www.handbrake.fr are good transcoders - there are others...

iMovie can deal with lots of file types - DV and MP4 are good... use the transcoder to convert the MPG files. After the conversion is done, quit the transcoder application, launch iMovie and drag the converted video file to the iMovie "storage" area.

Since you did not tell us which Mac or which version or OSX or which version of iMovie, that's about all the help available at the moment. Consider registering with, and using the Apple support communities at https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/imovie

If you only want to play the MPG videos, then just download and install Flip4Mac

A. 1. you need a windows computer, then plug in a FIREWIRE drive (has to be firewire not usb ill tell you why later)

2. put the windows 7 install disk in the computer drive them reboot like your going to install windows 7

3. when it asks you which drive to install to, select your external hard drive

4. let it install

5. plug it into you macbook via firewire( macs can only boot from external firewire drives not usb)

6. when you are starting up, on the mac hold down the option key you should see a gray background with two drives listed (unless you partition)

7.select your external drive from the list and you should boot into windows 7

What is terminal?

A. to start you need to read the whole guide to get this or you will either mess somthing up or screw up your minecraft.
ok first if you have osx lion then private message me on answers but if you still have snow leopard then what you do is go into finder, then library, the application support, then minecraft, then from there create a new folder called "mods" just like that and make a new folder and name it the name of your mods for example "zombe", thats what i have. then go into terminal (terminal is the macintosh version of command prompt, it is basically a way to do certain commands on a computer buy typeing it in computer code so it can be understood easier.) and copy/paste this (without the "")

mkdir mctmp
cd mctmp
jar xf ~/Library/Application\ Support/minecraft/bin/minecraft.jar"
then go into the new folder in your folder called mctmp and copy/paste all of your class files you downloaded with the mod (the .class's are the mods) then after you copy/paste them go back into terminal and copy/paste this code (without the "")

cd ..
rm -rf mctmp"
and your good to go! code one opens the mctmp folder and code two closes it.

What year should the Mac Mini be for apps programming?

Q. I am trying to learn objective-c to start programming apps for iphone. I have read alot of forums and people recommend the Mac Mini or the Imac. But the Mac Mini should have at least 4gb of ram. Somewhere I read for the Mac Mini to be 2006 or newer. Why? What about the Imac, what year should that be?

A. So that you can have the Intel processor. No sense in programming for an obsolete processor. Also, you probably want to be able to upgrade to the latest OSX, which requires the Intel processor.

Edit: I should mention... just for fun I made my own mac. I added a hard disk to my Window 7 computer. Now i can multi-boot the same computer into either Windows, Snow Leopard, or Linux. All I bought was the Snow Leopard box set, and followed "hackintosh" instructions from the internet. It was really hard to do though, and took me three solid days (my entire weekend) to get it working. I would rather have a mac mini, but can't afford it.

How to transfer iTunes from PC to Mac?

Q. Does anyone here know how to transfer an entire iTunes library (like apps, music, photos and such) from a Windows 7 PC to an OSX Lion Mac? I have the latest version of iTunes, if that helps.

A. You should be able to connect your ipod etc to your mac and it will prompt you to download itunes. When finnish it should allow you to sign in / sync with an existing account. Do this and you should have all of your apps on there.

When this is done you can just delete itunes from the PC.

Q. I downloaded a Minecraft texture pack (Mac OS X Lion) and realized my computer doesn't run it very well. But I can't switch back to the Default texture pack because this new one took the place of the Default option. How do I make Default actually Default again?

A. I don't know much about OSX but try deleting the minecraft folder in ~/Library/Application Support/ . After that redownload the Minecraft launcher and run it. It should now be like a fresh install of Minecraft. Note that you will lose any custom content so backup whatever you want to keep (such as saves).

Why does my 360 controller disable my Macbook's trackpad and keyboard?

Q. When I use my 360 controller with my mac, it works fine, but when I go to unplug it, my trackpad and keyboard no longer work. If I try to plug the controller back in or plug in an external mouse after unplugging the controller, still nothing happens. is it the driver i'm using? is there a way to fix it? i'm using the 15" macbook pro with the quad core i7 and 4 gigs of ram with OSX lion version 10.7.2.

Q. I want to download osx lion and upgrade but will it wipe my computer clean? I know it's a good idea to back up your files which I have all of my music, videos, etc backed up except my apps. I have some expensive apps and don't want them to go where I have to pay for them again. I also have windows 7 installed via parallels desktop 6. Will all of that stay on my computer when I upgrade or will it be wiped?

A. Nothing is lost. Only OS X apps are changed to newer versions. Installing OS 10.7 does not remove any of your expensive apps.

Even though your expensive apps will not be changed, removed, deleted, or otherwise made invisible, some of them will be "lost" in the sense that they will stop working. Here is how this can happen....

You see, the problem with those expensive apps is they have to work within an OS. It is quite common for a newer OS not to have any ability at all to use certain older apps. You would then have two choices:
-- Buy a newer version of said expensive app.
-- Install OS 10.6.x, which would put the OS 10.7 system in an archive directory and make OS 10.6 the working OS again. Then you would still need to dig up all the CDs or DVDs for all those expensive apps and install them in OS 10.6.x.

I don't understand why you are making this piecemeal backup. Why can't you simply use Time Machine? That would save the day no matter what happens. Those brainy engineers at Apple spent a lot of time developing Time Machine. What do you have against it?

What is the crime like in El Paso? (should I not stop and stay in a cheaper hotel there?

Q. I'm passing through Texas and it seems like El Paso will be the most convenient place to stay. I've heard tons of bad stuff about the crime there.

A. Don't stay in El Paso, drive another 40 miles and stay in Las Cruces. If you are going on down I10 turn on Avenida De Mesilla, there's a La Quinta, Best Western, and a Springhill Suites. There are cheaper motels (god no! Don't stay at one of these in El Paso!), on main street and motel blvd. If you happen to be going north on I25 there are hotels at the I25/ hwy 70 interchange. Thanks! The effects of the La Nina and El Nino phenomenons are becoming worse over the last couple of years, causing extremely intense thunderstorms in many areas across the Tropics .

A. Prior to Hubble's discovery of the distant galaxies redshift, Einstein was once asked if he believes the universe is expanding or contracting. He answered: "I don't know. All I know is that it is not static. Nothing is static in the universe!" ... Wise words from a wise man!

Likewise, everything on earth goes in cycles, sometimes called: oscillations. The El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is one of them. But there are many of them and they are all interactive. There is no special "reason" for El Nino to happen, other than ... fluids oscillate by nature. Take for example, the tide. The sea level moves up and down with the cycle of the moon. But did you know that in the tide, there are many, many cycles? Some of them repeat itself only once every four and half year, creating a spring tide higher than the average spring tide.

It is the same with the thermohaline circulation, a.k.a. the oceanic conveyor belt. It mixes all the oceans of the world in a period of perhaps a thousand year. The El Nino is part of that sea current oscillation.

To understand that we need to leave traditional mathematics for that of the theory of chaos and fractal equations. Here is an example: The wind blows over the Sahara desert, moving randomly sand corns. It is impossible to predict where they will land, there are too many factors. This is known as the Butterfly Effect. Yet, all those sand corns form dunes that are in a very defined shape, all having the same slope angle.

Likewise, our weather changes all the time but we can see global patterns, like El Nino or the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). But there is no reason to believe the "El Nino is getting worse." You will always find doomsday prophets that will tell you that "the end is near" and yes, we should reduce our emission of carbon dioxide but ... the problem is that good news is no news so we read only the bad effects. Did you know that more people die from cold than heat? So, a global warming is not only negative.
